Fertility treatment in Panjim

In Panjim the fertility conversation usually begins on a phone, late, after the house has gone quiet. You have read that the good centres are in Mumbai or Bangalore. You have already worked out roughly how many days of leave that would cost and what you would tell people at the office.
You may not need any of it. Strip fertility treatment down and most of it is scans, injections and one honest conversation, repeated. All of that happens here in Panjim.
What the Panjim clinic does
- Your first consultation — with Dr. Mayur Pai, MBBS, MS (Obstetrics & Gynaecology), fifteen years in practice. Both partners together, if you can manage it; fertility is not a woman's problem to carry alone.
- Follicle monitoring — the short ultrasound scans, every second or third day through the middle of your cycle, that show whether an egg is really growing and when it will be released.
- Ovulation induction — the tablets or injections that help the ovary ripen an egg, with the scans that must go with them; the usual treatment for PCOS.
- IUI — intrauterine insemination: prepared sperm placed into the womb at the right moment. It needs no theatre and no anaesthesia, so it is done here.
- Semen analysis and the blood work — hormones, thyroid, sugar, egg reserve; see male infertility.
- Pregnancy follow-up, including a high-risk pregnancy, once you are pregnant.
One caution belongs on the same page as the medicines. Tablets and injections that ripen eggs can ripen more than one, so twins become a real possibility — and a twin pregnancy is harder on the mother and on the babies than one baby at a time. Watching for that is part of what the scans are for. If too many follicles are coming up we would rather call that month off than take the chance.
What Panjim does not have, and what we do about it
An IVF cycle needs an embryology laboratory on exactly two days: the day the eggs are collected and the day the embryo is put back. An operation — laparoscopy, hysteroscopy, micro-TESE — needs a theatre and an anaesthetist. Panjim has neither. Ours are at Pai Hospital, Vaddem, Vasco-da-Gama, where they have always been.
On those days we send a car for you, free of cost. It collects you, brings you to the hospital, and takes you home again afterwards. Egg collection is done under light anaesthesia, so being driven home is the sensible way to travel in any case.
The fleet is on the road for a blunt reason. Dr. Pai was losing patients who could manage the treatment but not the travelling — women who would have been treated if getting there had been easier. Two hospital days in a whole cycle. Everything else in Panjim.
Why we tell you this on the first page
Some centres advertise IVF at an address with no laboratory in it, and the patient learns the truth on the morning she is told to be somewhere else. We would rather you knew now, while you are still deciding, than at the point where you have no good options left.
It is also, honestly, the stronger offer. A consulting room with no laboratory has to send your eggs somewhere — to another company's laboratory, on another company's schedule, handled by people you will never meet. Ours are handled in our own laboratory, inside our own hospital, by our own embryologist, in a theatre we do not have to book from anyone. The Panjim clinic is not a shopfront for a laboratory elsewhere. It is the near end of a practice that owns both ends.
Coming to us from around Panjim
Panjim is the practical clinic for Panaji itself and for Taleigao, Dona Paula, Miramar, Ribandar, Santa Cruz, Merces, Bambolim and Porvorim. If you are further north and Mapusa is an easier drive, there is a clinic there doing exactly the same work. If you are already near Vasco, go straight to the hospital.

Can I have IVF if I live in Panjim?
Yes, and nearly all of it happens in Panjim: the consultation, the scans, the injections and the blood tests. The laboratory work, meaning egg collection and embryo transfer, is done at our hospital in Vasco, which is about two days out of the whole cycle. A car is sent for you on those days at no charge.
Where is your embryology laboratory?
At Pai Hospital, Vaddem, Vasco-da-Gama, which is our own hospital. It is the only one in the practice and nothing is sent outside it. That is deliberate: a laboratory is an incubator, a filtered air supply and a trained embryologist in one room next to the theatre, and you build that once and run it properly rather than putting a version of it in four towns.
Do I have to go to Vasco for every appointment?
No. Consultations, follicle scans, injections, semen analysis and IUI are all done in Panjim. In a full IVF cycle the hospital is usually needed twice, and we drive you there and back on those days for free.
Which days does Dr. Pai see patients at the Panjim clinic?

Do I need a referral to come?
No. Call or message and come. Bring any reports you already have, however old and however untidy: a test that is still valid does not have to be repeated, which saves you money.
My husband cannot get leave. Can I come alone?
You can, and you will be seen properly. But a plan built on one partner's tests is half a plan, because a male factor is involved in about half of couples. If he truly cannot come, bring his semen analysis; if he has never had one, that is the first thing to arrange.
