IUI treatment in Goa
IUI (intrauterine insemination) is a simple fertility treatment in which washed, prepared sperm is placed directly inside the womb at the time an egg is released. It takes a few minutes, needs no anaesthesia, and you go home the same day. Heartbeats IVF carries out IUI in Goa. Every month begins with a small, careful hope, and every month it ends the same way — a test, a line that does not appear, a day you get through as if nothing happened.
What you want is a plan: something sensible to try first, without being pushed straight into the biggest treatment. For many couples in Goa, IUI is that first step.
What is IUI?
Intrauterine insemination means placing sperm inside the uterus (the womb). Naturally, sperm must travel all the way up to the fallopian tube where the egg waits, and most sperms are lost. In IUI, sperm washing in our laboratory separates the healthiest, most active sperm from the fluid around them, and that sperm sample goes straight into the uterus through a fine, soft tube.
Timing matters as much as the procedure. Scans follow your cycle so insemination happens just as the egg is released (ovulation). Tablets or injections are sometimes used to help the ovary ripen an egg.
Who IUI suits
- Unexplained infertility — every test normal, but no pregnancy.
- Mildly reduced sperm count or movement, not severely low — see male infertility.
- Irregular ovulation, such as in PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome).
- Cervical factor — mucus at the neck of the womb blocks sperm.
- Difficulty with intercourse, or a husband away at the fertile time.
- Couples using donor sperm.
IUI needs at least one open fallopian tube and a reasonable washed sperm count. We check both first.
When IUI is not the right choice
We would rather be honest than take a booking. IUI is the wrong treatment when:
- Both fallopian tubes are blocked or damaged. IUI still needs sperm and egg to meet inside the tube; IVF bypasses the tubes completely.
- Sperm count or motility is very low, or there is no sperm in the semen. Then ICSI (IVF fertilization technique for low sperm count)— injecting one sperm directly into an egg in the laboratory — is needed. Where there is no sperm at all, it can sometimes be retrieved from the testis by micro-TESE, done here under an operating surgical microscope — see male infertility.
- Moderate or severe endometriosis, or significant pelvic scarring. IUI seldom gets past them. Endometriosis is tissue like the lining of the womb growing outside it, on the ovaries or in the pelvis; it commonly causes painful, heavy periods and pain during intercourse, and can affect fertility. Both are treated by laparoscopy.
- Age and low egg reserve. Months spent repeating IUI are months that matter — see low AMH and ovarian reserve.
- Several well-timed cycles have already failed. Repeating the same treatment rarely changes the answer.
If any of these apply, we say so at the first consultation. Putting you through IUI cycles that were never likely to work is not kindness.
What happens on the day
- Your husband gives the semen sample; the fertility laboratory prepares it in about an hour.
- You lie down as for a routine internal examination, with a speculum as for a Pap smear.
- A very fine, soft catheter carries the sperm into the uterus — a couple of minutes.
- You rest briefly and go home. No anaesthesia, no fasting, no overnight hospital stay, no stitches.
Then comes the two-week wait, honestly the hardest part (emotionally only). We tell you exactly when to test for pregnancy. You should not test earlier than advised.

Only a small number of well-timed cycles are usually worth doing. If those fail, repeating IUI rarely changes anything, and we will say honestly when IVF is better.
Can I have IUI if one fallopian tube is blocked?
Often yes, if the other tube is open and healthy and the washed sperm count is reasonable. If both tubes are blocked, IUI cannot work and IVF is correct.
Do I need bed rest after IUI?
No. Rest briefly, then carry on normally. Prolonged bed rest has not been shown to improve the chance of pregnancy, and it makes the waiting harder.
