Dr. Mayur Pai
Dr. Mayur Pai is an IVF and fertility specialist and laparoscopic surgeon in Goa. He holds MBBS and MS (Obstetrics & Gynaecology) (Goa Medical Council Reg. No. 3092) and has been in practice for fifteen years. He is a consultant at Heartbeats IVF, which has its own embryology laboratory and operating theatre in Goa, and he personally performs the procedures that patients come for. He sees patients at its clinics in Panjim, Margao, Mapusa and Vasco. He is also a consultant at Pai Hospital, Goa (est. 1985).
One doctor, whom you will actually come to know
Couples often tell us they want to see the same doctor at every visit and always know who is in charge. Heartbeats works the other way round. Dr. Pai consults, plans the treatment, does the scans, performs the procedure, and is the person you talk to when something worries you.
He is a gynaecologist first — MBBS, then MS in Obstetrics and Gynaecology — with fifteen years of practice behind the fertility work. That matters, because a fertility problem is often a surgical one: blocked tubes, endometriosis, fibroids, scarring inside the uterus. Endometriosis, if the word is new to you, is tissue like the lining of the womb growing outside the womb; it often causes pain, and it can quietly damage the tubes and ovaries. Being a laparoscopic surgeon (keyhole surgery through small cuts in the abdomen, using a camera) means he can find and treat these himself — see laparoscopy and hysteroscopy for fertility.
What he does himself
- Consultation, ultrasound monitoring and treatment planning
- Egg collection and embryo transfer in IVF
- Micro-TESE — recovering sperm from the testis under an operating microscope, for men with no sperm in the semen sample.
- Laparoscopy — keyhole surgery through two or three small cuts in the abdomen, to reach the tubes, ovaries and outer surface of the uterus.
- Hysteroscopy — a thin telescope passed through the cervix (the neck of the womb), along a passage that is already there, to see and treat the inside of the uterus. Unlike laparoscopy, no cut is made anywhere, and you are usually home the same day.
- Care of a high-risk pregnancy, once you are pregnant
Three senior doctors are on board, so a qualified doctor is available for an emergency or an urgent scan. The IVF laboratory is fully equipped, including ICSI — injecting a single sperm directly into an egg. Single-use disposables are used throughout.
How he practices
Honest counselling, even when honesty costs us the case
You will be told what treatment can and cannot realistically do for you, in plain words, before you spend anything. If a simpler, cheaper treatment is worth trying first, or if IVF is unlikely to help, you will hear that. This site carries no outcome figures: the only honest assessment is the one that fits your age, your reports and your history, and it belongs in a conversation, not on a web page.
Preventing OHSS, not just treating it
OHSS, or ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, is a serious complication of the injections used to grow eggs: the ovaries over-respond, fluid collects in the abdomen, and in severe cases the woman needs hospital admission. This practice is built around not causing it. Dosing is chosen for your own ovarian reserve, we scan closely through the cycle, and we are genuinely willing to freeze the embryos for later — or stop the cycle — if you respond too strongly. Stopping a cycle costs us goodwill; an avoidable admission would cost you far more.
Knowing when to refer
Some situations need more than a fertility clinic: a pregnancy needing intensive care, a genetic problem needing specialist advice, a male factor needing a urologist. The rule here is to refer early, to someone genuinely competent, rather than keep a patient who would do better elsewhere.
Where to find him
The embryology laboratory and the operating theatre are the practice's own, here in Goa, not a rented arrangement. He sees patients at our clinics in Panjim, Margao, Mapusa or Vasco.
The clinics are set up that way deliberately. Most of your visits, including the fortnight of monitoring in a treatment cycle, can be planned close to where you live. And if you consult at our Panjim, Margao or Vasco clinic, we send a car for you: car pickup and drop at zero cost to the patient from your home to our location, for consultations and treatment days alike.
You are welcome to call reception on 095459 20817 (call timings 9am to 7pm), or send a WhatsApp message to 095185 02773 (no phone calls, only messages) before deciding anything.
Questions people ask
Will Dr. Pai do my IVF procedure himself?
Yes. He personally does the consultation, the scans, the egg collection, the embryo transfer and the surgery. Three doctors are on board for cover and emergencies, so you are never left without a doctor.
Will I be cut open for a hysteroscopy?
No. Nothing is cut, anywhere. A hysteroscopy is done with a thin telescope that goes in through the cervix, using the passage that is already there, so there is no wound to heal and you are usually home the same day. Sometimes a short anaesthetic is used, sometimes none at all. The one you may be thinking of is laparoscopy, which does need two or three small cuts in the abdomen. Many women refuse a hysteroscopy believing the two are the same. Please do not: it is a short test, and it often shows what nothing else will.
How do I choose a good IVF doctor in Goa?
Ask who will actually perform your procedure, and whether you will see the same doctor at each visit. Ask what is done to avoid OHSS, and what happens if a cycle has to be stopped. Nobody can honestly promise you a baby.
Does Dr. Pai treat male infertility too?
Yes. Male factor is involved in a large share of couples who struggle to conceive. He performs micro-TESE, sperm retrieval from the testis under an operating microscope, for men with no sperm in the semen, and the laboratory offers ICSI.
Will you tell me honestly if IVF is unlikely to work for us?
Yes, and before you spend money on it. You may be advised to try a simpler treatment first, or referred to someone better placed to help you.
Where are the Heartbeats IVF clinics?
You can consult Dr. Pai at four clinics in Goa: Panjim, Margao, Mapusa and Vasco. Treatment is done here in Goa, where the practice has its own embryology laboratory and operating theatre, and most of your visits can be planned close to where you live. If you consult at Panjim, Margao or Vasco, we offer pickup and drop at zero cost to the patient from your home to our location, for consultations and treatment days alike. Reception plans the days with you. Call reception on 095459 20817 (call timings 9am to 7pm), or send a WhatsApp message to 095185 02773 (no phone calls, only messages).
Does the clinic look after the pregnancy afterwards?
Yes. Dr. Pai is an obstetrician as well as a fertility specialist, so high-risk pregnancy care is part of the practice; the same doctor sees you through a difficult pregnancy.
