Fertility treatment in Mapusa

Bardez is the far corner of this problem. From Mapusa almost everything medical seems to be somewhere else. Fertility treatment is not one appointment — it is a fortnight of them, at fixed times, in a fixed order — so "somewhere else" is usually where treatment quietly stops. Not because anybody gave up. Because a scan at nine in the morning on the other side of Goa is not a thing a working person can do three times in one week.
That gap is what the Mapusa clinic exists to close.
What we do in Mapusa
- Consultation with Dr. Mayur Pai, MBBS, MS (Obstetrics & Gynaecology), fifteen years in practice — the first honest reading of where you actually stand, before anyone spends anything.
- The whole work-up — hormone, thyroid, sugar and egg-reserve blood tests, ultrasound of the uterus and ovaries, and the husband's semen analysis. Both partners, not just the wife.
- Follicle monitoring — the short scans through the middle of the cycle that show whether an egg is growing and when it will be released. These are the appointments that decide whether treatment is bearable, and they are the ones we have deliberately put close to you.
- Ovulation induction and IUI — the first two real treatments, both done here, neither needing a theatre. Ovulation induction is also the usual first step for PCOS.
- Pregnancy follow-up, including a high-risk pregnancy.
The tablets and injections used to bring on ovulation can ripen more than one egg at a time, so twins become a genuine possibility. A twin pregnancy is harder on the mother and on the babies, with early delivery and newborn intensive care both more likely. The scans watch for it, and if too many follicles are growing we cancel that month rather than accept the risk. Being asked to stop is the care working, not failing you.
The two days that are not in Mapusa
An IVF cycle needs an embryology laboratory on two days only: egg collection and embryo transfer. An operation needs a theatre and an anaesthetist. Mapusa has neither, and no clinic of its size honestly does.
So on those days we send a car for you, free of cost — from Mapusa to the hospital at Vasco and home again afterwards. Of the four locations this is the longest run, which is exactly why it is the one that matters most here. Egg collection is done under light anaesthesia, so you should not be driving yourself home in any case.
Dr. Pai put the fleet on the road because he was losing patients to the journey rather than to the medicine. From the far north that is not a small courtesy. It is the difference between finishing a cycle and abandoning one.
If your hours are difficult
A great many people in Bardez work hours that were not designed around clinic appointments — hotels, restaurants, shops, shifts that end when the rest of Goa is starting. Monitoring scans themselves are short. Say what your working pattern is when you book, and we will fit the monitoring around it as far as the cycle allows. The cycle sets the days; we can usually do something about the hour.
Ask where the laboratory is. Ask us, and ask anyone else
It is the single most useful question a couple can ask a fertility clinic, and almost nobody thinks to ask it: where, physically, will my eggs be? A consulting room with no laboratory has to send them somewhere — to another company's building, on another company's schedule.
Ours go to our own laboratory, in our own hospital, handled by our own embryologist, next to a theatre we never have to book. We have written that plainly here rather than let anyone find out on the morning she is told to travel.

Is there fertility treatment in North Goa, or do I have to go south?
There is. The Mapusa clinic does consultations, the full work-up, follicle monitoring, ovulation induction and IUI, and for many couples that is the entire treatment. Only the IVF laboratory days and any operation are at our hospital in Vasco, and we drive you there.
Mapusa to Vasco is a long drive. How often will I really do it?
In a full IVF cycle, usually twice, for egg collection and embryo transfer, plus one more day if you need surgery. A car is sent for you each time, free, and brings you home. Everything else, which is most of it, is in Mapusa.
Who arranges the car, and does it cost anything?
We arrange it and it costs you nothing. Tell us on WhatsApp once your date is fixed and the pick-up is set with it.
Can my scans be early, before my shift?
Tell us your working hours when you book. The cycle decides which days the scans fall on and that cannot be moved, but the time of day usually can be, and a monitoring scan itself is short.
Do you see patients from Pernem and Bicholim at the Mapusa clinic?
Yes, Mapusa is the nearest of the four for both. Come with whatever reports you already have, however old.
What if I need a laparoscopy or a hysteroscopy?
Those are done in our own theatre at Pai Hospital, Vasco, by Dr. Pai himself; he is a laparoscopic surgeon as well as a fertility specialist. Transport from Mapusa is provided free on the day, and a hysteroscopy in particular involves no cut at all.
